SA 179 Tube Seamless Cold-Drawn Heat Exchanger Tubes

SA 179 Tube Seamless Cold-Drawn Heat Exchanger Tubes

A SA 179 tube is a seamless, cold-drawn, low-carbon steel tube specified for tubular heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer equipment. The designation is commonly written as ASME SA-179/SA-179M in pressure-equipment documentation and is closely associated with ASTM A179/A179M. It is selected when a project needs a consistent tube surface, controlled dimensions and dependable heat transfer at a competitive material cost.

The most important point is that SA 179 is a tube specification, not a generic name for every carbon steel tube. The purchaser must confirm the applicable edition, size, minimum wall thickness, heat-treatment condition, inspection requirements and code or project requirements before placing an order. Vishal Steel can help customers compare the requirement with its carbon steel pipe and tube range and prepare an inquiry based on the equipment design.

What is SA 179 tube?

SA 179 tube refers to seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubing manufactured to the SA-179/SA-179M specification. The ASTM version, A179/A179M, describes the material as minimum-wall-thickness seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer apparatus. The ASTM scope covers outside diameters from 1/8 in. to 3 in. (3.2 mm to 76.2 mm), inclusive.

The term “SA” is used in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code material specifications. In commercial discussions, suppliers may show the material as ASTM A179, ASME SA179, A179/A179M or SA-179/SA-179M. These designations should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the purchase order and governing code. The required marking and documentation should match the standard specified by the engineer or end user.

SA 179 is often called a boiler tube in the market, but the ASTM scope itself emphasizes heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer equipment. Whether it is acceptable for a particular boiler or pressure part depends on the applicable design code, jurisdiction, inspection plan and purchaser specification.

Why is SA 179 made by the cold-drawn process?

Cold drawing reduces the outside diameter and wall thickness through a die after the tube has been produced by a seamless process. This operation can improve dimensional control and surface finish while producing a tube suitable for close-fitting tube sheets and heat-transfer assemblies.

The manufacturing route normally includes seamless tube production, cold drawing, heat treatment after the final cold-drawing operation, straightening, cutting and inspection. The exact production sequence can vary by mill and size. The material certificate should identify the specification, heat or lot number, size, test results and any additional requirements included in the order.

Cold drawing does not make a tube suitable for every pressure or temperature service. Performance still depends on tube diameter, minimum wall, design pressure, design temperature, corrosion conditions, tube-sheet design, vibration and the selected joining method.

SA 179 tube chemical composition

SA 179 is a low-carbon steel specification. Typical limits published for ASTM A179/ASME SA179 include carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon controls. A commonly referenced chemistry range is shown below; the purchaser should always verify the values against the edition named in the order and the supplied material test certificate.

•Carbon: 0.06–0.18%

•Manganese: 0.27–0.63%

•Phosphorus: maximum 0.035%

•Sulfur: maximum 0.035%

•Silicon: commonly limited to a maximum of 0.25%

Low carbon content supports formability and helps the tube meet the specification’s fabrication and testing requirements. It does not mean that the tube is corrosion-proof. If the process fluid or cooling water is corrosive, the engineer should evaluate water chemistry, erosion, pitting, galvanic effects and the need for a more corrosion-resistant alloy.

SA 179 tube mechanical properties

For the standard size range to which the mechanical requirements apply, commonly published minimum properties for SA 179 include:

•Tensile strength: 325 MPa minimum (47 ksi)

•Yield strength: 180 MPa minimum (26 ksi)

•Elongation in 50 mm: 35% minimum

•Hardness: 72 HRB maximum, where applicable

Mechanical-property requirements may not apply to tubing below 1/8 in. outside diameter or below 0.015 in. (0.4 mm) wall thickness, as noted in the ASTM scope. This is one reason why a quotation should state the exact outside diameter and minimum wall instead of only saying “SA 179 tube.”

These values are material requirements, not a direct statement of allowable working pressure. The allowable pressure of a heat-exchanger tube must be calculated using the applicable design code, tube dimensions, temperature, joint details, corrosion allowance and service conditions.

SA 179 tube sizes and dimensions

ASTM A179/A179M covers outside diameters from 1/8 in. to 3 in. The actual sizes, wall thicknesses, length tolerances and dimensional tolerances available for purchase depend on the manufacturer, production route and project specification.

A correct inquiry should include:

1.Standard and edition, such as ASTM A179/A179M or ASME SA-179/SA-179M.

2.Outside diameter and minimum wall thickness, in millimetres or inches.

3.Quantity, including the number of pieces or total length.

4.Fixed length or random length requirement.

5.Straight tube or U-bent tube requirement, if applicable.

6.End condition, packing method and marking requirements.

7.Required inspection documents, such as a material test certificate, third-party inspection or special testing.

8.Design temperature, design pressure and service fluid when technical selection support is required.

Main applications of SA 179 tube

SA 179 tube is used where heat must be transferred between fluids through a tubular surface. Typical applications include:

Heat exchangers

In shell-and-tube heat exchangers, the tubes separate two process streams while allowing heat to pass through the tube wall. The seamless, cold-drawn construction and controlled dimensions are useful for tube-sheet installation and service inspection.

Condensers

Condensers remove heat from a vapour so it changes into a liquid. SA 179 tubes may be selected for condensers when the material, wall thickness and water chemistry are suitable for the service.

Feedwater heaters and process heaters

Power and process plants use heat-transfer equipment to preheat water, recover energy and control process temperatures. The tube material must be matched to the operating fluid, temperature, pressure and corrosion risk.

Chemical, petrochemical and HVAC equipment

Heat exchangers appear in chemical processing, oil and gas, refrigeration and HVAC systems. The correct tube grade depends on the process fluid and the purchaser’s specification; SA 179 should not be substituted for an alloy or stainless steel grade simply because the dimensions are similar.

SA 179 testing and quality checks

The ASTM specification identifies chemical analysis and several product tests. Depending on the applicable edition and purchase order, quality checks can include:

•Heat and product chemical analysis.

•Hardness testing.

•Flattening testing.

•Flaring testing.

•Flange testing, where specified.

•Hydrostatic testing or an allowed nondestructive electric test.

•Dimensional inspection, visual inspection and surface examination.

•Material identification, marking and certificate review.

The official ASTM description specifically lists hardness, flattening, flaring, flange and hydrostatic testing. Additional examinations such as eddy-current testing may be requested by the buyer or included in a project inspection plan, but they should not be assumed unless stated in the order.

A material test certificate should be checked against the purchase order. At minimum, compare the stated standard, heat number, size, chemistry, mechanical results, heat treatment and test status. For critical equipment, the purchaser may also require inspection and test plans, traceability records, third-party inspection or EN 10204 documentation.

SA 179 tube versus other carbon steel tube grades

SA 179 is not a universal replacement for all carbon steel tube grades. The specification is focused on seamless cold-drawn heat-exchanger and condenser tubing. Other grades may be designed for different manufacturing methods, pressure-temperature services or mechanical requirements.

When comparing SA 179 with another grade, review more than the nominal chemical composition. Check the intended application, seamless or welded construction, minimum wall or nominal wall basis, heat treatment, mechanical properties, test requirements, allowable stresses and code acceptance.

A tube can have a similar outside diameter and still be unsuitable if its specification, wall basis, testing or design-code acceptance does not match the equipment requirement.

How to choose the right SA 179 tube supplier

A capable supplier should be able to confirm the specification and edition, offer the requested dimensions, provide traceability and explain the available inspection documents. The supplier should also distinguish between stock material and made-to-order production rather than treating every size as immediately available.

Before ordering, ask for a quotation that clearly states the standard, size, quantity, length, tolerance, heat-treatment condition, test requirements, packing and documentation. If the tube will be installed in pressure equipment, send the relevant data sheet or purchase specification so the supplier can quote against the actual requirement.

Frequently asked questions about SA 179 tube

Is SA 179 the same as ASTM A179?

SA 179 and ASTM A179 refer to closely related material designations used by ASME and ASTM. The exact edition and code context still matter. The order should state the required designation clearly, and the supplier’s certificate should use the specified standard.

Is SA 179 a seamless tube?

Yes. The specification covers seamless, cold-drawn, low-carbon steel tubes for heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer equipment.

Is SA 179 suitable for high-pressure service?

It may be suitable for a particular heat-transfer application, but the material name alone does not establish allowable pressure. Engineers must check the applicable code calculation, temperature, diameter, wall thickness, corrosion allowance and service conditions.

What is the maximum outside diameter covered by ASTM A179?

The ASTM scope covers outside diameters from 1/8 in. to 3 in., or 3.2 mm to 76.2 mm. Tubing outside or below the stated mechanical-property range requires careful review of the applicable requirements.

Does SA 179 resist corrosion?

SA 179 is low-carbon steel, not stainless steel. It can perform well in suitable heat-transfer service, but corrosion resistance depends on the fluid, temperature, water chemistry, velocity and operating conditions. Where corrosion is a major concern, the design team may need to evaluate stainless steel or an alloy grade.

What information should be included in an SA 179 tube inquiry?

Include the standard and edition, outside diameter, minimum wall thickness, quantity, length, end condition, service, test requirements, inspection documents and delivery location. Providing the equipment datasheet helps the supplier quote accurately.

Conclusion

SA 179 tube is a focused material specification for seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes used in heat exchangers, condensers and similar thermal equipment. Its value comes from the combination of controlled dimensions, low-carbon chemistry, specified mechanical properties and defined product testing—not from the designation alone.

For a reliable purchase, match the tube to the design code and service conditions, specify the exact dimensions and documentation, and verify the delivered material against its certificate.
